Decongestant Tea: A Natural Way to Clear Sinuses

As an allergy sufferer, I am constantly looking for different ways to reduce sinus pressure and the associated aches and pains allergies can bring.

This means relying on a lot of prescription and over the counter medication. However recently I’ve tried to limit the amount of medication I take. Besides the numerous side effects, they are costly and troublesome to have to keep buying.

Sudafed, for example, is a miracle drug which I rely on frequently when allergies are at their worst, however this is one drug which can only be taken for short periods before it starts to actually reverse and make your symptoms worse.

So with this goal of finding natural remedies in mind, I began searching for different decongestants which would reduce sinus pressure without medication. I already knew hot curries, or anything with chili was great at relaxing the sinuses and freeing up mucus, so I wanted a quick fix that would use the magic capsaicin found in chili.

Decongestant Tea
I stumbled across some different ideas on youtube and finally settled on making a relaxing spiced chili and honey tea, which would taste good and through the steam and the hot chili would start to free up my sinuses. Here’s the recipe:

1 thumb sized piece of ginger
1 small chili
1 tsp of natural honey (manuka, if your budget allows!)
Juice of 1/2 lemon or lime
1 tsp black tea (optional)

Finely chop or crush the ginger into a paste, finely dice the chili and add to a jug alongside the lemon, honey and tea if you are using. I don’t always include tea if I don’t want any caffeine, but it works well with the tea just like a spiced marsala chai.

Cover the entire tea mix with boiling water and allow to infuse for a few minutes. Finally strain into a mug and enjoy!

I’ve tried a few different recipes, including using chili powder, and some were way too hot! Trial and error is the key. You want to end up with a nice, sweet, warming tea that has a slight kick. This will have your sinuses opening up and has an incredible ability to clear your head.

I now take this every few days, and especially if I’m feeling particularly blocked up. Give it a try, and see how you feel – embrace the power of chilis!
